Affinity Project Page

Information about the Fall 2007 Affinity Project

Objectives:

To select a topic of your choice, a topic you have an affinity for, to learn as much as you can about that topic; to prepare a presentation about your topic; to be able to tell the class about your topic; to be able to display and talk about your project at an Affinity Fair, and most importantly to have a great time learning about a topic you are interested in.

What you need to start doing:

First, you need to select a topic you are interested in and can find at least three books about. If you can’t locate three books about your topic, you need to pick another topic. We will be selecting people to learn about in the spring; so don’t pick a person to research.

Second, you need to start reading about your topic and writing down facts, ideas, and words that you learn. You should record your facts, ideas, and words as well as the title and author of your research books in a research notebook. You can collect facts at home and at school. If you do research at home, you can collect facts from any resources you have at home. You will need to keep a record of those resources too.

Important Dates:

Friday, November 16, 2007 - Choose a topic and find three books about it.

Monday, November 26, 2007 - Bring in your drawing, picture or map to share with the class.

Friday, December 7, 2007 - Bring in your ten questions and answers to share with the class.

Friday, December 14, 2007 - Bring in your words, definitions, and pictures to share with the class.

Thursday, December 20, 2007 - Affinity Fair (8:45 - 9:45 in the classroom)

Presentation Requirements:

You will need a project board or science board to display your information. There are five items I would like to see you prepare and have on your board:

1. The title of your project, your name, and a sentence or two about why you picked your topic or are interested in your subject.

2. Ten questions about your topic with the answers. This can be prepared using a piece of folded paper with the question on the front and the answer inside.

3. Five to ten words related to your topic with accompanying definitions and pictures.

4. A drawing you made, a picture you drew and colored, or a map you made relating to your topic.

5. A bibliography – a list of the books and other resources you used for your project.

You may add any other items to your display to share information about your topic. Some suggestions if you want to do more for your Affinity Project:

1. Timeline or chart

2. Math problem

3. 3-D project or model

4. Paragraph

5. Graphic of any type

6. Or, your own ideas
