Essay of the Week #3 Due Date: Friday, October 23rd, 8:30 a.m.
Length: One Page
Topic: This week's assignment isn't an essay. For Friday, I would like you to write a letter to a favorite teacher from the past. In your letter, describe some of the things your favorite teacher did that made them special.
Description: Remember the audience for your letter is the teacher you are writing to, so pretend that the teacher you choose will actually read your letter. Please use the correct letter format when writing your letter, and remember what the required length is.
Essay of the Week #2 Due Date: Friday, October 16th, 8:30 a.m.
Length: One Page
Topic: Fear
This week's essay will focus on the first chapter of Call It Courage, by Armstrong Sperry.
Think for a moment about Mafatu's fear of the ocean. Where did this fear come from? Was it right for Mafatu to feel this way? What was the precise moment in the story that Mafatu decided to conquer his fear?
Now, think about a time in your life that you have been afraid. Describe the circumstances that led to you being afraid. Is the fear you experienced similar to Mafatu's fear? Were you able to conquer your fears or did they win?
(Remember, it's OK for the fears to win out sometimes. After I was chased by the bear in Alaska, I felt a fear similar to Mafatu's whenever I went out in the woods. And now, years later, I'm still on edge whenever I go hiking!)
Description: You can design your essay however you like, but here's a tip: I would recommend that you divide your essay into two sections. The first half would focus on describing Mafatu's fear, and the second half would focus on describing the time you felt fear.
This will create a "planning web" very similar to the one we have been practicing in class.
Remember to begin your essay with an introduction - don't just say, "Mafatu was afraid of the ocean because..." The reader needs to know who Mafatu is! Also, end your essay with a conclusion of at least one sentence.
Essay of the Week #1 Due Date: Friday, October 9th, 8:30 a.m.
Length: One Page
Topic: If you swallowed a potion that made you invisible for 24 hours, how would you spend your time?
Description: Remember to plan your story before you start writing using the web method we have practiced in class. Make sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and an ending.
