Research Paper Guidelines

Possible Topics:

1) The Titanic

2) Hurricanes

3) New Mexico

Estimated Dates of Project:

October 17 - 31 - Research on Chosen Topic

November 1 - 14 - Rough Draft

November 14 - December 9 - Final Draft

Friday, December 16th - Final Draft & Presentation due

Step 1 - Research

On October 17th students chose their topic. I tried to keep the topics

simple and interesting. The students spent a considerable amount of time

during the week researching their topic using library books and the

classroom laptops. Hopefully, the students have collected the majority of

their research by now.

I am requiring that students document their sources.

For example, if they found information on a website, then they should list

the specific website as a source. Information from a book or magazine would

also be listed as a source.

Step 2 - Rough Draft

Beginning on Monday, October 24th, we will begin organizing student notes

and research. Students will then begin planning their papers and writing

the rough draft.

When the rough draft is finished, it will be edited by three students before

coming to me to review.

The rough draft should be written by hand to allow for changes and corrections.

Update - 10/27/05

Rough Draft Length - The class and I discussed the length of the paper today and came away with the

following:

Introduction - 1 paragraph

Section 2 - 1 - 2 paragraphs

Optional Extra Sections - determined by student

11/2/05, we will begin working on the rough drafts.

Update - 11/14/05

The final draft should be word-processed. This can either be done at home or at school.

I will give students time to work on it in class.
